Welcome to Positively Tulsa

Good morning, Tulsa.

This week’s issue keeps coming back to people making room—for someone to belong, for a piece of Tulsa history to stay visible, for local food to reach people another day of the week, or for a mother dog and nine puppies who suddenly require somewhere safe to land.

There’s also a packed weekend ahead, from historic aircraft and an alpaca open house to PhilBOO! and a free Iron & Wine concert at Guthrie Green. The forecast is looking pretty cooperative too.

Thanks for opening Issue 2. I hope you find at least one Story, place or event worth sharing with someone else.

Sincerely,

Ryan Dean

Featured Story

When Willie Steele greeted customers at Able & Co. with a simple “Welcome in,” those two words carried more than a workday greeting. After difficult job experiences, Willie found Bridges, friendships, earned income and more room to speak for himself—while his mother, Shameeka, learned to step back and let him answer in his own voice. Their Story is about work, independence, family and what can happen when someone is given both an opportunity and the space to say what they want for their own life.

Positively Curious Trivia

About how many architectural artifacts, blueprints and historical records does Tulsa Foundation for Architecture say are housed in its Kravis archives?

Take a guess. We’ll give you the answer near the end of the issue.

More Good Around Tulsa

Before a guide can point out the detail that makes a Tulsa building suddenly feel different, someone has to find the story behind it. Tulsa Foundation for Architecture’s Writing & Research Team works in that quieter space—digging through blueprints, old photographs, periodicals and building histories so the city’s architecture can be understood, not just admired. It’s a way to help preserve Tulsa’s memory without ever having to lead a tour.

At Plaza Santa Cecilia in East Tulsa, a long-planned entrepreneurship center has finally moved from plans and property work into construction. The project is meant to put classrooms, workspaces, mentorship and practical business support closer to a community where immigrant entrepreneurs are already building livelihoods. The groundbreaking is real progress—but the more interesting question is what this place could become once the doors actually open.

Tulsa Property & Preservation

Two Tulsa landmarks with very different histories have just received National Register recognition: the former Hawk Dairies building along Route 66 and First Christian Church downtown. Both may be headed toward new uses, but neither story is finished. The designations raise a bigger question for Tulsa: when an old building gets a second chapter, how much of the place people remember will still be there?

A mother dog named Olivia and nine nursing puppies required somewhere safe to go, and Tulsa-area foster Tanya Crawford made room for all ten. She cleared out her garage, welcomed the entire family together and added them to a remarkable personal history that already includes more than 150 foster dogs. Their next chapter is still unfolding—and Tanya’s story shows how much rescue work depends on somebody being willing to say yes.

Tulsa Farmers’ Market doesn’t completely disappear when the Saturday tents come down. TFM To-Go lets shoppers order from local farmers, ranchers, bakers and makers online, then pick everything up together on Wednesday—or use delivery in selected Tulsa ZIP codes. It’s a surprisingly practical way to keep buying local during the part of the week when the market itself is nowhere in sight.
